The crusader removals Perth team often get asked about tips on decluttering prior to moving, so thought we’d share some here.
When you are considering moving between Brisbane and Sydney, you may want to declutter your home before you relocate. These tips are to help you move both effectively and efficiently so that unpacking at the other end of your interstate relocation is stress free:
Before your removal, start with a plan:
Make a list of what needs to go and what can stay. This will help you to be more focused as you declutter.
- Start decluttering small items first:
it is easier to let go of smaller items that have less sentimental value. This will help you to build up momentum for decluttering the rest of your home.
- Work through each room:
Declutter one room at a time so that you don’t feel overwhelmed. Make sure to go through all of the storage spaces in each room, including closets, cupboards and drawers.
Think about your new location
If you are considering Interstate removals (say between coastal Brisbane and Blue Mountains NSW), consider the change in environment and lifestyle to help you declutter. What will you need to take with you, and what will be best sold.
When moving from Melbourne to Cairns, you may not need to take as many winter clothes with you, but be sure to think about return visits and if your move is for a short time due to work or a long time as a lifestyle change.
- Use the KonMari method:
You may have heard of Marie Kondo, who this method is named after. When preparing for your upcoming removal, you might awnt to give this a go. This decluttering method involves getting rid of anything that doesn’t “spark joy”. This can be a helpful way to let go of items that you no longer need or use.
- Donate or sell items:
Instead of throwing away items that you no longer need, consider donating them to a local charity or selling them online or at a garage sale. This will help you to declutter your home and make some extra money at the same time.
If you haven’t used it in the past 6 months, chances are you won’t use it in the future. Donate, sell or bin items accordingly.
- Whatever the removal, pack smart:
Use smaller boxes for heavier items and larger boxes for lighter items. This will make moving day much easier. Check with your removalist if they have packing available to purchase.
If you need help packing, you may wish to use a professional packing service to come and box items for you. Check if this service is offered by your removalist for local or interstate removals.
Label everything for your removal.
Be sure to include the contents of each box, and which room it belongs to. If there are high value items (such as jewellery) its best to take them on your person.
This will help you to know where everything is when you arrive at your new home. Check with your removalist if they provide labels, or if you need to do them, and make a count.
By following these simple tips, you can declutter your home before you move and make the whole process much smoother.
